Movies don’t get much more music-drenched than the romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer, out July 17. The film’s dialogue features references to The Smiths, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, and Sid Vicious. while its equally eclectic soundtrack boasts tunes from Regina Spektor, Feist, Wolfmother, Black Lips, and Carla Bruni. Music video veteran Marc Webb directs stars Zooey Deschanel -- as the eponymous Summer, who doesn't believe in true love -- and Joseph Gordon-Levitt -- as Tom, a fantasy-sequence-prone greeting-card writer and incurable romantic.

In one of the movie’s most memorable sequences, Gordon-Levitt's madly-smitten character gyrates through a full-on dance sequence to the sound of Hall & Oates’ 1980 soul-pop classic "You Make My Dreams."

Screenwriter Explains '500 Days' Focus on Architecture, Downtown LA

After last week's reader email about the film "500 Days of Summer" focus on a "failed architect" and downtown's buildings, Curbed LA checked in with co-writer Scott Neustadter to ask: Why architecture? Why downtown LA? In an email, Scott responds: "First off, the character isn't exactly a failed architect. He's an aspiring one who never really committed to it and instead finds himself as a copywriter for greeting cards. It's kind of the polar opposite job than the one he wants. ("why make something temporary like a building when you can make something that lasts forever like a greeting card?")

'(500) Days of Summer's' many ways to tell a love story

Young man meets young woman. They court, fall for each other and eventually split up. Told as a postmortem patchwork of emotions and memories, "(500) Days of Summer" skips across the life of a fleeting relationship, with all of its disagreements, deep connections and trips to IKEA, lingering moments in private and enthusiasms shared in public. The film manages to be a romance even as it assays a relationship predestined to failure, perhaps being all the more romantic for chasing the effervescence of love in spite of the knowledge of its doom.

"..As soon as you're trying to show your audience what you're feeling, you're sunk," says Gordon-Levitt of what makes for believable on-screen head-over-heels intensity. "You have to really feel it and then not do anything. I would just watch her, and then let my fake self fall in love with her..."
