'Battle In Seattle' nominated for Leo Award

The 10th Annual Leo Awards have just released the nominees for Feature Length Drama. Along with 'They Wait' and 'Crossing', 'Battle In Seattle' has been nominated. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday, May 24, 2008 in Vancouver, BC.

Established in 1998, the Leo Awards celebrate excellence in British Columbia film and television. The 10th Anniversary Leo Awards Celebration and Gala Awards Ceremonies take place May 23 and 24 at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver.

First-time director charges into ‘Battle’

Stuart Townsend has recently made a promotional stop in Dallas where Todd Jorgenson reports. Townsend talked to the press about his american experience and the events in 1999, which spoke volumes to him about corporate culture in the U.S. 9 years later, the first time director has made a feature film of the riots and even snagged a high profile cast for the independant film.

"...I really loved the story, and I wanted to tell it. This was a war against corporate power. Corporations were ruining our world. You have to have corporations, but the whole point is to try and make them sustainable and responsible..."

Battle In Seatle to screen at South By Southwest Film Festival

SXSW Film Festival has just released it's full lineup of features to be screened. 'Battle In Seattle' will screen in the 'Spotlight Premieres' program. The Festival takes place March 7th-15th in Austin, TX.

"I think this year's lineup represents our current world of extremes," said SXSW Film Festival Producer Matt Dentler. "The films we found are both funny and emotional, both indie and Hollywood, both entertaining and political, both real and magical. It's a well-rounded slate of films, from both veteran masters and promising newcomers."

Minnesota Public Radio has posted an interview with Battle In Seattle director Stuart Townsend. The film stars Michelle Rodriguez, Andre Benjamin, Charlize Theron and Woody Harrelson. He talks about the 6 years leading up to the making of the film, financing issues and telling a story about an issue that people have strong opinions about.

"...Through my research I found there were so many viewpoints. There was the media, there was the protesters, there was the cops, there was the mayor, and there was this sense of escalation with all of these viewpoints. So that's what I did, I just tried to capture as many viewpoints as possible..."

"Battle in Seattle" was shot in 29 days, and Townsend light-heartedly describes it as "military operation", with no divas on set and great energy throughout. Townsend also discusses the message: how anyone can make a difference.

"...It's a people power movie. I think everyone doesn't feel like they're being listened to. Most people feel like they can't make a difference. It was really a diverse collection of regular Americans, who shut down the world's most powerful trade organization. It really made a difference. I think when you're tactical about things, and you join together, you can make a difference, and that's the message..."

Battle in Seattle has wrapped production! On December 13th following a carefully planned crane shot, the cast and crew headed to a downtown Vancouver club for a celebratory wrap party. Dennis Harvey of Variety has written a favorable review of Stuart Townsend's directorial debut, Battle in Seattle. Harvey goes onto say Townsend "aquits himself well, if not outstandingly, as both writing and directing newbie." Playing Dale, Woody Harrelson has "some especially good moments" and Rade Serbedzija as Dr. Maric is a "memorable presence." Townsend describes himself as a movie nerd inspired by the 1999 protesting event that turned him to directing. With that, the actor embarked on a 6 year journey to get "Battle in Seattle" in theaters. Townsend also talks about the cast and how they made his first time an easy ride.

"...It is amazing, as a first-timer, to be working with Ray Liotta and Woody Harrelson and Martin and Charlize. There were different styles, different ages, different characters. It was like an actor’s conveyor belt because it was just like one actor after another. Sometimes you would see eight actors in a day because you’d be moving from different scenes. I was so lucky. Some actors were very easy. Other actors had a lot of questions. There was the whole range. It was great..."

The film opens September 19th and stars Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, Ray Liotta, Andre Benjamin, Connie Nielsen, Channing Tatum and Michelle Rodriguez. Townsend spend a lot of time carefully researching the 1999 riots at the World Trade Organization in Seattle in order to create a realistic portrayal in the film. He talks about the politics behind the WTO, working with Ray Liotta and how manage such a complex story in a film.

"...I suppose the basic premise was to create characters that an audience would attach itself to, to try to connect on a different level, not on an explicitly intellectual level, and not even on a political level. I focused on the conflict and the drama and slipped the politics in between. I'm not trying to speechify or hit people over the head. An all-star ensemble cast has been lined up to do "battle." The cast of the hotly anticipated indie flick, Battle in Seattle, has been rounded out by America's #1 up-and-coming male movie star Channing Tatum ( A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), Michelle Rodriguez ( S.W.A.T., Blue Crush), Jennifer Carpenter ( The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Showtime's Dexter), Connie Neilson ( Gladiator) and Joshua Jackson ( Bobby). They'll join an ensemble cast headed by Academy Award winner Charlize Theron ( Monster), Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson ( The People vs. Larry Flynt), Golden Globe nominee Ray Liotta ( Something Wild), actor/international hip hop sensation Andre Benjamin of Outkast and Martin Henderson ( The Ring).

Written and directed by Irish film star Stuart Townsend ( Queen of the Damned), the movie is based on the 1999 World Trade Organization riots that caused approximately $20 million worth of looting and damage to the city's downtown core.

Made with a budget of under $10 million, the independent feature was jointly produced by Kirk Shaw of Insight Film Studios in Vancouver, Mary Aloe of Proud Mary Entertainment in Los Angeles and Maxime Remillard of Remstar. The film, shot primarily on location in Vancouver, will debut next year. Grosvenor Park and Remstar Productions Inc. are also production partners in the project. Critically acclaimed Director of Photography Brit Barry Ackroyd ( United 93) is lensing the picture.

"Even though the feature is being made on a modest budget by movie industry standards, it's instantly perceived as a "big" picture once you cast a major international star like Charlize Theron,"� says Shaw. "Because of the film's star power and contentious subject matter, it's being highly anticipated by both media and moviegoers alike."�

Battle in Seattle 's script weaves together the stories of an ensemble cast while tackling the controversial issue of the 1990 WTO riots. In 1999, tens of thousands of activists halted the organization's first ministerial meeting on soil. For five days, the riots brought the downtown area to a standstill, with police driving back unarmed protesters with pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets. Political fallout from the event played a part in the resignation of former Police Chief Norm Stamper and the failure of former Mayor Paul Schell to win a re-election bid in 2001.

But the movie is careful not to take sides, Aloe explains: "The lead characters run from protesters to pedestrians to police to politicians. We did not want to give only one point of view. When you see the movie, you'll find lots of gray areas. It's neither sympathetic nor unsympathetic to protesters and police."�

Aloe is currently partnering with movie star Ashton Kutcher on an MTV pilot titled Trick'd. She is also teaming with #1 female prosecutor Nancy Grace on a one-hour drama series based on the CNN talk show hosts trials and times called Amazing Grace, now in development with 20 ^th Century Fox. As well, Aloe is in pre-production on the feature films Cabin Fever 2 with Lions Gate and Ruthless, based on the best-selling book chronicling the rise and fall of famed hip hop star Eazy-E and his manager, Jerry Heller.

Variety reports that Charlize Theron is ready to do battle in the Northwest.

Thesp is set to star in ensemble drama "The Battle in Seattle," along with Andre Benjamin (aka rapper Andre 3000), Martin Henderson, Woody Harrelson and Ray Liotta.

Irish actor Stuart Townsend will write and helm in his directorial debut. He's eying a November start date for the political actioner set against the backdrop of the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle.

Vancouver-based Insight Film Studios is producing with Proud Mary Entertainment in Los Angeles. Hyde Park Entertainment and Remstar are signed on as producing partners and put in coin for the pic, budgeted at less than $10 million. Endeavor Independent helped arrange financing.

Like "Bobby" or "Crash," the film will use interlocking strands to tell the story of the WTO meeting and ensuing riots from various perspectives, such as those of protesters, pedestrians, politicos, police and WTO delegates.

During the five-day WTO meeting, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Seattle. What started out as a peaceful protest intended to stop the talks escalated into a riot and eventual state of emergency, with the National Guard called in. Townsend will use some actual footage of the riots. Producers are Insight topper Kirk Shaw and Proud Mary's Mary Aloe. Hyde Park's Ashok Amritraj is expected to take an exec producing credit.

Endeavor will sell North American rights. Hyde Park is repping overseas rights and will be offering the project to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.

The Northwest News Tribune has posted an interview with police captain Jim Pugel, who oversaw the WTO riots in Seattle. He attended the 'Battle In Seattle' premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival and discusses how accurate the film portrays the actual events.

"...I think the movie did portray what a tough crossfire those men and women of the Seattle Police Department were in during that time. We had specific directions as to which way the city wanted to go, and the men and women of the Police Department did everything they were asked to..."

ComingSoon.net sat down with Stuart Townsend to talk about how an actor from Ireland ended up directing one of the more impressive civil rights related non-doc films of the year. "Battle in Seattle" has just released nationwide on September 19th. The film stars Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Channing Tatum, Andre Benjamin, Martin Henderson, and Woody Harleson. Townsend also discusses his idea for the movie and the stings he pulled for his diverse and talented cast.

"...we were a day from shutting down. We were ten weeks into pre production with no cast, and we waited on one actress for seven weeks and she then came back and said "no," and it pretty much devastated us and we didn't know what to do. Our producers said, "Look I'll give you a week and if we don't have anyone we'll have to shut down," and it came right up to the last day when Woody actually said yes..."

Vancouver, B.C. Onsight Studios is pleased to announce that filming will begin November 1, 2006, for its new feature, Battle in Seattle, starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron ( Monster), Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson ( The People vs. Larry Flynt) and international hip hop sensation Andre Benjamin of Outkast. Written and directed by Stuart Townsend ( Queen of the Damned), the film is based on the 1999 World Trade Organization riots that caused approximately $20 million worth of looting and damage to the city's downtown core.

Made with a budget of under $10 million, the independent feature was jointly produced by Kirk Shaw of Insight Film Studios in Vancouver and Mary Aloe of Proud Mary Entertainment in Los Angeles. The film, shot primarily on location in Vancouver, will debut next year.

In the vein of the Oscar-winning film Crash, Battle in Seattle's script weaves together the stories of an ensemble cast while tackling the controversial issue of the 1990 WTO riots. In 1999, tens of thousands of activists halted the organization's first ministerial meeting on soil. For five days, the riots brought the downtown area to a standstill, with police driving back unarmed protesters with pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets. Political fallout from the event played a part in the resignation of former Police Chief Norm Stamper and the failure of former Mayor Paul Schell to win a re-election bid in 2001.

They talk about where they were when the actual battle in seattle happened, and the fact that most people don't remember the event. That being said, Townsend shares that it is because of this, he found it inspiring to big it to the big screen. They also both chat about the cast, the ideas and what they got out of the film.

"... wanted to use actors that young people really liked. If I made a documentary, no one would have seen it. By this approach, we thought that if we could make it more about the characters and the emotional connections, not just political connections, we could hit somewhat of a mainstream audience..."

It was difficult because it was a small budget so there are only so many streets you can close down that you are able to get for the [right] price. So often we would have one street and shoot down it and then we would get a hold of another set of actors and shoot down it and then we would get a whole lot of other actors and cross shoot it. ThinkFilm's offensive wins 'Battle'

All U.S. rights to Battle in Seattle have been aquired by ThinkFilm. The announcement came this morning after a bidding war among four distributors. ThinkFilm came out on top, closing the deal at approximately $2 million dollars for Stuart Townsend's directorial debut. This is the second major deal for ThinkFilm at TIFF, the first being Helen Hunt's directorial debut "Then She Found Me," picked up for just under $2 million.

Stuart Townsend nominated for Irish Film and Television Award

Stuart Townsend has been nominated in his home country for The Irish Film and Television Award for his original script for Battle in Seattle. The Awards, presented annually by the Academy, are a platform to honour and celebrate outstanding Irish creativity, talent and achievement; to encourage a high standard of arts and technique in work produced.

The Awards are open to all talented Irish people working in the film and television industries in Ireland and internationally. Congratulations to Stuart and those involved in the film!

They will be held February 17th.

Blockbuster signs deals for indie exclusives Titles include Screen Media's Personal Effects, Battle in Seattle

Blockbuster has been quietly but aggressively adding rental title exclusives to its shelves.

A number of indie films, including Screen Media’s Personal Effects and Battle in Seattle and E1 Entertainment’s Baby on Board, are popping up within exclusive 30-day windows at Blockbuster before their wider release at other retailers.

Personal Effects is currently available only at Blockbuster until its May 12 larger retail bow. Baby on Board is expected on Blockbuster shelves this month before its wide June 2 release. Battle in Seattle was at Blockbuster in February before launching wide on March 10.

Some rival retailers, including members of the National Entertainment Buying Group, have expressed concern over not having the same ability to offer customers such films at the same time as Blockbuster.

However, in several instances, the Blockbuster exclusive was arranged outside of distributors’ control. For example, Screen Media lacked the rights to deliver Battle in Seattle and Personal Effects to its retail partners until Blockbuster’s 30-day exclusive on the title ended. In these two cases, the films’ producers struck separate deals with Blockbuster for their exclusive roll-out at the chain. Screen Media then negotiated with the producers, Redwood Palm and Insight Films, respectively, to distribute the titles to other retailers.
