'Crossing' Nominated for Leo Award

The 10th Annual Leo Awards have just released the nominees for Feature Length Drama. Along with 'Battle In Seattle' and 'They Wait', 'Crossing' has been nominated. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday, May 24, 2008 in Vancouver, BC.

Established in 1998, the Leo Awards celebrate excellence in British Columbia film and television. The 10th Anniversary Leo Awards Celebration and Gala Awards Ceremonies take place May 23 and 24 at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver.

This past weekend Roger Evan Larry's Crossing opened in Vancouver and Toronto. Roger Evan Larry's new film Crossing is a deft, quirky thriller laced with sex, blackmail and gender bending glamour. At times comical, romantic, erotic, suspenseful and shot in a gritty but elegant film noir style, the story revolves around tough-guy Daniel Cimmerman (Sebastian Spence, Dawson's Creek, First Wave�), a gangster who is trying to legitimize the family business. As Daniel gets deeper into his criminal dealings he discovers through a bizarre, near fatal encounter, his affinity for the thrills and perils of cross-dressing. Embroiled in a wild affair with Davina, (the beautiful Crystal Buble, Cold Squad,Donovan Life�, sister of crooner Michael Buble) a blackmailing call girl, he must find his way through a maze of disgrace and pleasure to discover where his real loyalties lie. Bif Naked's My Greatest Masterpiece will premiere at the Celluloid Social Club this Wednesday, March 21st in support of the theatrical release of Roger Evan Larry's Crossing.

Featuring Bif Naked, Sebastian Spence and Crystal Buble, My Greatest Masterpiece is the lead single on the Warner released Crossing soundtrack that features, among others, Swollen Members, Nelly Furtado, Champion, Michael Buble, Buck 65 and Sara Slean. The video was directed by Roger Evan Larry and produced by Paul Armstrong.

'Crossing' Premieres in Vancouver

'Crossing' enjoyed an exciting theatrical debut in Vancouver on February 1st, premiering at the historic Ridge Theater. Crossing's director, Roger Evan Larry, and writer, Sandra Tomc, were in attendance, as was the entire cast including Sebastian Spence, Bif Naked, Crystal BublÃ©, and Fred Ewanuick.

Also making a surprise appearance were Michael BublÃ© with girlfriend and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt, who were there in support of the film and Michael's sister, Crystal.

Congratulations Roger and Sandra!

Crossing gets positive early reviews

In a pre-release review, Rob Salem of The Toronto Star says "CROSSING ....surprises and delights in strange and unexpected ways. Expertly and evocatively shot, wonderfully cast and vastly entertaining."

In the USA, The San Jose/Silicon Valley weekly Wave Magazine calls CROSSING "A must see" and "A wild ride", and Gary Morris, editor of the esteemed Bright Lights Film Journal(est.1974) calls CROSSING "a striking entry in the neo-noir canon".

Crossing: Music deal with Warner Records

Crossing also just inked a deal with Warner Records their first in Canada since Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter.

It features mega-superstar Michael Buble (brother of our female lead Crystal Buble, who is also helping in the film's promotion), current chart toppers Bif Naked and Sara Slean among others. Music videos are planned.

Much better is the Canadian feature Crossing.

The title refers not to a life transition as might be expected, but to cross- dressing, the secret fantasy of otherwise straight, conventional Daniel.

His father exacts a death-bed promise from Daniel to take over the family business, which is low-level gangsterism, and make it respectable.

This is difficult for a man who spends much of his time dreaming of donning a garter belt and mascara.

Daniel is attacked in an alley by a kind of gender criminal a dyke with a huge scar on her face who somehow divines his secret, force-feminizing him at gunpoint: Say ˜I am Jennifer Kosinzski!�

Trying desperately to balance his normal� existence with an involvement with a blackmailing prostitute and her unsavoury friends, Daniel increasingly unravels.

In perhaps the film's most affecting scene, Daniel, still in makeup, talks unsparingly to the woman he thinks he loves, who is actually engineering his downfall, about the lure and terror of his fetish.

Crossing is a complex but never confusing thriller with a twist.

Solid performances, strong atmospherics, and a perverse streak that never panders make this fetish-fuelled drama a striking entry in the neo-noir genre.

CROSSING surprises and delights in strange and unexpected ways.

Expertly and evocatively shot, wonderfully cast and vastly entertaining, this modest little mob drama has so much more to offer than a cursory description of its wonky plot might indicate.

Because, let's face it, how many films could even pull off having a conflicted, cross-dressing criminal kingpin as their main protagonist?

And, more to the point, make you love him?

You cannot take your eyes off Sebastian Spence, absolutely riveting in a subtle and sympathetic performance.

Backing him up, an outstanding ensemble of the Vancouver underworld's most eccentric (yet somehow also endearing) low-lifes, from Crystal Buble's aching hooker-with-a-heart to Alan C. Peterson's pervert procurer, Bernie Coulson's aspiring comedian thug to rocker Bif Naked 's lesbo leg-breaker.
