The director will walk the red carpet with Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender, but the film’s main star, Brad Pitt, is not expected to put in an appearance.

Pitt plays a US officer who leads a band of Jewish American solders – the “basterds” of the title – around Europe, taking bloody revenge on Nazis during the war.

The group stumble across an actress and undercover agent, played by Kruger, with a revenge plan of her own.

Basterds had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where Tarantino won the coveted Palme d’Or in 1994 for 'Pulp Fiction'.

Pitt said his involvement in the film began over five bottles of wine and some kind of “smoking apparatus”.
