Synopsis

Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid.     InvictusIf you watch the trailer for Clint Eastwood’s upcoming biographical/drama Invictus, it might just make you read the book it’s based on, Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film, staring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela ( Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid.  Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.  Re-teaming with Eastwood, the behind-the-scenes creative team is led by director of photography Tom Stern, production designer James J. Murakami, editors Joel Cox and Gary D. Roach, and costume designer Deborah Hopper, all of whom most recently worked with the director on Gran Torino.

  • Title change for Eastwood’s new Drama

    Based on the book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation by John Carlin, Eastwood’s film once working under the title The Human Factor will now be titled Invictus, named after a favorite poem of Mandela’s.  The film takes a look at the life of Nelson Mandela after the fall of apartheid in South Africa during his first term as president as he campaigns to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup event as an opportunity to unite his countrymen.  The film stars Eastwood’s Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby co-star Morgan Freeman as Mandela, and Matt Damon as the Springboks victorious captain Francois Pienaar.
