Synopsis
Opens in New York and Los Angeles March 7th
A strong blend of suspense, star-crossed romance, and wry comedy of manners, Married Life is an unconventional human drama about the irresistible power and utter madness of love.Harry (Chris Cooper) decides he must kill his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) because he loves hertoo much to let her suffer when he leaves her. Harry and his much-younger girlfriend Kay(Rachel McAdams) are head over heels in love, but his best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan)wants to win Kay for himself.
As Harry implements his awkward plans for murdering his wife, the other characters are occupied with their own deceptions. Like Harry, they are overwhelmed by their passions. but still struggle to avoid hurting others.
Married Life is an uncommonly adult film that surprises and confounds expectations. While it plays with mystery and intrigue, its ultimate concern is: “What is married life?”In its sly way, Married Life poses perceptive questions about the seasonal discontents andunforeseen joys of all long-term relationships.

SX has posted an interview with 'Married Life' director Ira Sachs. The film is a departure from his previous work, Delta Boy (1996) and Forty Shades of Blue (2005), but the director insists the themes are similar.

Smoking out high drama hidden behind deceit
Published on: July 24, 2008The Age has posted an Interview with 'Married Life' director Ira Sachs. Set in the 1940's, the film features many characters smoking, a lot. Although we may rarely see actors smoking on screen anymore, it was quite natural for the time period.
"...You don't get into too much trouble if it's appropriate for the story and the characters. Back then, people smoked while they were giving birth..."

"The clothes lent to a certain way of sitting and standing and walking, and the hairstyle and make-up; they really do dictate so much. But there are other times when I love to slouch. That’s where I’m most comfortable; you just have to stay on top of it."

'Married Life' comes to Plimoth
Published on: April 29, 2008Ira Sachs 'Married Life' will be headed to Massachusetts along with star Chris Cooper. The film follows the story of two men driven to villainy by their desire for one woman. The screening is part of a fundraiser for the Linn Theatre at Plimoth Plantation. They're trying to buy a new 35mm projector so they can show foreign and independent films.
“The studios primarily play to the 16- to 17-year-old male mentality, and I’m not so interested in that,” Cooper said. “My choices have always tried to get the older folks back to the theater and back to watching movies. My choices are, hopefully, a little more mature.”
