Not only will they be breaking with tradition to have the proceedings co-hosted, but they returned to tradition to honor four Governors Award recipients with an elegant evening of high spirits and warm intimacy, unlike most years where the Governors Awards are handed out on television.
The dinner-kudos ceremony, held Saturday at the Hollywood and Highland grand ballroom, saw producer Roger Corman, cinematographer Gordon Willis and thesp Lauren Bacall each get multiple standing ovations during a half-hour apiece of clips, testimonials and toasts. AFI Thesis Film Wins Prestigious Production Award
Published on: November 11, 2009
Read More »Clear Blue, a short film to be directed by Canadian born Lindsay MacKay, has just received the prestigious Bridges/Larson Foundation Award.
Each year this grant is awarded to an American Film Institute (AFI) thesis production which displays potential to tell a unique and ambitious story in the form of a short narrative film.
The grant, with a value of $7,500, will help a great deal in the team's fundraising process. As AFI Graduate students, the team is expected to raise almost their entire budget from third party sources.
Clear Blue is a coming of age Fantasy/Thriller about Simon, an eager 16 year old, who gets his first job as a lifeguard at the local indoor pool. At first his job is dull, until he notices Flova, a 71-year-old woman who comes to swim every morning. As the days go on, Simon begins to find himself strangely attracted to her and becomes curious about her remarkable ability to remain submerged under water for an unusually long time. One day Simon follows Flova into the change room, and discovers a startling secret... From this point on, Simon finds it impossible to stay away. As his sexual desires rage, Flova’s need for his companionship also begins to grow. While the unlikely pair struggle to keep their relationship a secret, they both become aware of the potential danger, until one day, they realize there is no turning back.
The key team is comprised of an international bunch who came together while pursuing their careers as narrative filmmakers at the AFI in Los Angeles, California. The team includes Lindsay MacKay (Director) and Brent Martin (Producer) from Canada, Mattias Troelstrup from Denmark (Cinematographer), Eun Kyung Nam from Korea (Production Designer), and Rachel Kats from the United States (Editor).
The team is currently developing the script, and are pushing hard to reach their fundraising goal of $55,000. You can donate to the film by visiting their website at www.clearbluethefilm.com
