Going Green
Blood is the first "Brand" title that our studio (Pacific Gold Entertainment) will be producing. By branding, we intend to have one identity, and several revenue and merchandise streams. To explain this more precisely, first we have the feature film Blood: A Butcher's Tale. Next is the video Game Blood: Butchers Block, and then we are producing a Graphic Novel, Soundtrack and hundreds of ancillary items that can represent the Blood "Brand".
The first step is making the film Blood a Butchers Tale. In the current film market, horror films are considered bullet proof. Now the question of how to make a horror film that is unique?
Our answer was to shoot it Green Screen. We have been keeping a keen eye on this style of films for some time now. The following is a list of all of the green screen films released to date. (My preference).
1- Sin City
2. 300
3. Sky Captain
4. Casshern
5. Immortel (Ad Vitam)
6. Able Edwards
Yeah, you can count Spy Kids 2 ,3 and Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but they are not the same. Children's fare is exaggerated, and in the end everything looks like a candy coated fun house.
Why shoot an entire film Green-screen?
Cost: In our case we have the advantage of owning a full soundstage next door .Taking a page out of Robert Rodriguez film book, we centralized the workflow. Our studio is a virtual one-stop-shop. While shooting in the sound stage, we can pipe the footage down to our HD editing suits. We housed our actors in our lounge. Shooting was very quick, so actors were on their feet for most of their shooting days.
Style: In our hyper-realistic world, the cost of building our sets would have been astronomical. We wanted to create a decaying world, on the brink of extinction. Through miniatures, photogrammetry and CGI, we are able to build structures and environments reflect our dark and surreal comic book style.
Most of our work is contained in the preparation, pre-visualization and post production. We could have used two more months of prep, which eventually saves you time and money on the expensive post end of things.
In the following blogs I promise to elaborate in detail the process of producing a green screen feature.
