Low Grounds Synopsis
Darkly handsome and intense Delany Maynhardt appears to be the typical rebellious high school dropout on the verge of obscurity. Bucking the system, he shuns a comfortable, albeit dysfunctional, existence at home with his alcoholic mother, for an abandoned dilapidated factory inhabited by squatters and drug addicts. His only salvation from life on the fringe is his internship at the old grand theater, and a consuming obsession with the beautiful and untouchable actress Beatrice.
The theater is run by the nervy and eccentric director Edwina, who decides to eschew warnings and mount a production of Orpheus of the Underworld a play that was banned since the time an actress was killed during a run of the show three decades ago.
From the utterance of the first words in archaic Greek on opening night, superstition becomes horrific reality when a portal to the parallel dimension, the Low Grounds, is torn open. Delany's obsession, Beatrice, is the first to fall victim to this supernatural occurence, when her soul is separated from her body and 'drawn under' to the Low Grounds on stage before a horrified crowd.
As the lone witness to the rift between dimensions, it is up to Delaney to cross the line between worlds and risk his life to save Beatrice. With the help of ex-occultist, theater composer Richard, Delany is provided the mystical tools needed to go after the possessed wolf and restore Beatrice's soul to her body. Haunted by the creatures from the Low Grounds and seen as delusional by many, Delany must brave his darkest fears when his efforts obliterate the Keeper of Lost Souls, leaving him to stands alone to repair the rupture between dimensions.
LOW GROUNDS is a music driven supernatural thriller that chronicles Delany and his quest to save his town from other-worldly destruction. Filming will take place in Lodz, Poland, one of the last cities to escape recent government promoted gentrification. Full of texture, atmosphere, and still displaying the ravages of WWII, Lodz is the ideal backdrop for a story in which time is an illusion, and the concrete world we perceive is only a diaphanous layer away from The Low Grounds
