Synopsis

Genre: Drama | War

Set during the height of the First World War, PASSCHENDAELE tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a soldier who is brutally wounded in France and returns to Calgary emotionally and physically scarred. While in the military hospital in Calgary, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a mysterious and attractive nurse with whom he develops a passionate love. When Sarah's younger asthmatic brother David (Joe Dinicol) signs up to fight in Europe, Michael feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him. Michael and David, like thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle of Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as “Passchendaele”. It is a story of passion, courage and dedication, showing the heroism of those that fought in battle, and of the ones that loved them.   • 'Passchendaele' opens Cinefest

    The Sudbury Star has posted an article on 'Passchendaele'. The film recently opened the Toronto Film Festival last week, and has gone on to open for the Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival Sunday night. Paul Gross wrote and directed 'Passchendaele', was able to secure its $20-million budget, the largest ever for a Canadian film. Gross also shares that on the first day of shooting, 20 extras were sent to hospital because they were showing signs of hypothermia.

  • Actor discovered his passion while filming Passchendaele

    The Toronto Sun has posted an article on 'Passchendaele'. Written, directed and staring Paul Gross, the film is set during World War One, and follows Canadian troops in one of their biggest battles. Co star Gil Bellow says the experience inspired him so much that he's began working on his own scripts.

    "...I've started getting my hand in on producing and writing and there is a film I want to direct. There is this film that has been in my head for 20 years and, after I went and did this (Passchendaele), I finally sat down and worked on it. We just finished the script a week ago..."

  • Passchendaele Begins Ten Days of TIFF Craziness

    Martini Boys has posted an article on 'Passchendaele'. Written, directed and starring Paul Gross, the film kicks of the Toronto International Film Festival this week. With a budget of 20 million, it's one of the most expensive Canadian films ever made, and is generating a fair amount of buzz.
