Synopsis
Genre: Comedy
The story follows an ordinary mans search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman, who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. Larry's unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry's chances for tenure at the university. Also, a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person; a mensch, a serious man? - In Theaters October 9th, 2009.

The Coen Brothers Don't Get Too Serious With 'A Serious Man'
Published on: September 14, 2009
By Shannon Nystedt
movieset.comThe Coen Brothers Joel and Ethan are responsible for instant classics including: Fargo, The Big Lebowsk, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men and Burn After Reading only to name a few. Their most recent film A Serious Man, is surely to follow suit as they take things back to their roots with the closest they'll ever get to doing a personal biopic. It's set within a Jewish community in an unnamed Midwestern suburb much like the Minneapolis neighborhood in which the brothers grew up. Set in 1967, A Serious Man follows Larry Gopnik who has somehow insulted the universe, resulting in his wife leaving him, his children disrespecting him, and his job stressing him out. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person; a mensch, a serious man?

Simon Helberg: The Heeb Interview
Published on: May 7, 2009
His father worked for Mel Brooks, and that’s a tough act to follow. But Simon Helberg doesn’t need a daddy complex (nor he be reminded that his pops Sandy had bits in High Anxiety, History of the World Part 1 and Spaceballs), because, as a lead on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory and with a role in the Coen Brothers’ upcoming comedy A Serious Man (scheduled for an October release), Helberg is not concerned with filling his father’s shoes. Heeb spoke with Helberg about his recent gigwork.
"...I grew up around the business and hanging out at the Groundlings my whole childhood, so I think it sort of engrained itself into my bones. But I didn’t want to be an actor until the end of high school. I was really going to go down the music road..."
