'Shutter Island' Earns Back Half It’s Budget In Its First Weekend

Shutter Island is said to of earned over 40 million dollars in its first weekend, it’s budget was 80 million.

Topping the charts in the box office is nothing unusual for super-star Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road). Here he pulls It off again with another phenomenal performance in Shutter Island. Millions rushed to the theaters it's opening weekend to catch a glimpse of Leo doing his thing. Having seen it myself during its opening day, I can tell you that this psychological thriller delivers everything we would expect from the films of the caliber Leo tends to act in. Of course the films stunning quality is not solely due to Leo, the rest of the cast also deliver, not to mention the writer, director and cinematographer. As far as psychological thrillers go, there tends to be a certain darkness to them, but don’t let that deter you, this film has a certain beauty that offsets the darkness. Don’t miss it while it’s still in theaters to take in the full spectacle.

DiCaprio Traumatised On Movie Set

Leonardo DiCaprio became so traumatised on the set of his new movie Shutter Island, he forgot where he was.

The Titanic actor plays a tormented cop stuck in a hospital for the criminally insane in his fourth outing with director Martin Scorsese.

DiCaprio was put through gruelling scenes for the film, which involved being pelted with rats while having to remember complex dialogue.

And the experience took such an emotional toll on the star, DiCaprio started to lose his sense of reality.

He says, "My character was going through extreme emotional trauma and it's hard for those types of things not to rub off on you. Mark Ruffalo and I had to spout out three pages of dialogue. We had to talk through the wind machines, the rain machines and rats being thrown at us. But, just like the character, we had to persevere in finding out what was really going on in Shutter Island.

"A few weeks towards the end of filming, I started to forget where I was. We kept pushing this character further and further. It was day after day of re-enacting a traumatic event that was either a dream or reality for this guy. I remember saying to Marty, 'I have no idea where I am or what I'm doing.'"

Martin Scorsese on Upcoming Mystery Thriller ‘Shutter Island’

67-year-old director Martin Scorsese set his sights high when he decided to direct the film adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island.

Set in 1954, Shutter Island staring Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road), Mark Ruffalo (Where the Wild Things Are) and Ben Kingsley (Fifty Dead Men Walking), follows a pair of detectives sent from the mainland to investigate a mysterious disappearance on an island prison for the criminally insane.

"…When I got to it I said, 'Oh, my, this has to be exactly right,' " a compact-and-dapper-looking Scorsese says of the film's hair-trigger plotting. And the actual filmmaking made him feel he was trapped inside a Hitchcock movie: "When I got to the shooting and editing of it," he says, "it was like being thrown down a spiral [staircase]…”

'Shutter Island': Is Scorsese hitting the grind-house circuit?

You know when you hear someone say in a threatening tone of voice that "You can never leave this island!" that you are in natural-born horror-movie territory.

That seems to be the message behind the new Paramount trailer for "Shutter Island" that just went up on the Web. The film is loaded with A-list talent, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese, but the vibe of the trailer seems to be: Don't expect anything too personal, this is still a genre-film thrill ride. It's pretty obvious what Paramount is going for, in terms of commercial appeal, since the studio is opening the movie on Oct. 2, basically the same date that Warners used for the release of "The Departed," Scorsese's Oscar-winning crime film of 2006.

Scorsese began his career making genre films -- his 1972 film, "Boxcar Bertha," which starred Barbara Hershey and the late David Carradine, was a low-low-budget project for Roger Corman. He's returned to the form on occasion, with mixed results, depending on how much you liked seeing Robert De Niro chew the scenery in "Cape Fear." So it's hardly a surprise to see Scorsese in grind-house mode again.
