Bio

RICHARD HOOVER (Production Designer) has designed sets for theater and film for many years. His production design credits in film include “Henry Poole is Here,â€� for Mark Pellington; “Loss of the Tear Drop Diamond,â€� for Jodie Markell; “North Country,â€� for Niki Caro; “Drunkboat,â€� for John Malkovich; “Girl Interrupted,â€� for James Mangold; “Live From Baghdad,â€� for Mick Jackson; “The Cradle Will Rock,â€� “Dead Man Walkingâ€� and “Bob Roberts,â€� all for Tim Robbins; “Payback,â€� for Brian Helgeland; “Apt Pupil,â€� for Bryan Singer; “Ed Wood,â€� for Tim Burton; “Torch Song Trilogy,â€� for Paul Bogart; and “Mothman Prophecies,â€� for Mark Pellington. His television credits include “Twin Peaks,â€� “Fail Safe,â€� “Heat Waveâ€� and “Family of Spies.â€� He has designed several music videos, including “Lonesome Dayâ€� for Bruce Springsteen, and pilots for current network and cable shows including “Numb3rsâ€� and “Entourage.â€� Hoover also has several distinguished theater credits, most recently “The Sevenâ€� at La Jolla Playhouse, “The Glass Menagerieâ€� at the Guthrie, “Seven Guitarsâ€� directed by Ruben Santiago Hudson (Signature Theater), and Eve Ensler's “Treatmentâ€� for director Leigh Silverman (Culture Project).

Production Designer- Job Description

The PD is engaged when the scale of, or the approach to, the production requires special coordination between several departments. The PD's duties include: (a) generating set design sketches and renderings, location selections and treatments; and design concepts relating to the set decoration, properties, special effects, lighting, costuming, make-up and hair; (b) collaborating with the Producer, Director and DOP to realize these elements on film; (c) working with the Director and DOP to determine key shots; (d) establishing production budgets and schedules in conjunction with the Producer and Director; (working the the Art Director and the applicable departments to achieve the style of a motion picture production.
