Star Trek Sweepstakes Winners Announced!

Earlier in May, MovieSet started a Star Trek Sweepstakes where you could win tons of free Star Trek gear! We were giving out tons of prizes, and we got TONS of entries!

TREKnology: Where we've boldly gone, gadget-wise

In September of 1966, the NBC television network released an iconic but short lived series that would inspire generations of inventors and technologists to bring about changes in our daily lives in the use of technology that many of us take for granted but was once within the realms of strictly Science Fiction.

The original series, based on a “Wagon train to the Stars” Western turned Sci-Fi adventure concept envisioned by Gene Roddenberry, Dorothy C. Fontana and Matt Jeffries which ran for a total of 3 seasons from 1966 to 1969 is the basis for the feature film prequel/remake which is being released this weekend, nearly 43 years later. In the span of those four decades, many of the gadgets and technologies showcased in STAR TREK and in the revival shows and feature films which followed it in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s did eventually come to fruition.

Co-star in new ‘Star Trek' gave character her own touch

Stepping into her “Star Trek” costume made Zoë Saldana feel like a Trekkie.

The film, opening nationwide Thursday with 7 p.m. screenings, is based on the 1960s TV series created by Gene Roddenberry. “Star Trek” follows the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise, taking viewers to the origins of the ship's crew, characters that fans have come to know through the years.

Given its rich history and devoted fan base, Saldana, 30, was a bit overwhelmed to become a part of the “Star Trek” family.

"...I didn't know these characters when I signed on for this film, and I've ended up taking these characters home with me...”

Canadian actor to beam to Calgary for Star Trek premiere

Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood was in Toronto today promoting the upcoming blockbuster Star Trek, but his mind was on Vulcan.

Greenwood, who plays Capt. Christopher Pike, will be in Calgary to walk the red carpet for the special premiere of Star Trek tomorrow night, arranged by Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, after he heard the town of Vulcan, Alta. had been turned down as the host site for the movie's world premiere.

Star Trek opens for the rest of us earthlings Friday.

Trek star to get lifetime award

Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year's Saturn Awards.

The 78-year-old will be presented with the accolade in recognition of his work as an actor and director.

Nimoy is best known for playing Spock in the original Star Trek for which he earned three Emmy nods for the role.

Star Trek's Chris Pine on how he took over the role of James Kirk

Chris Pine, who takes on the iconic role of James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek, told SCI FI Wire that the main challenge in rebooting the franchise was to create a first adventure that appealed to longtime fans and also brought new fans into the fold.

Pine steps into William Shatner's boots in the May 8 release, playing a young version of Kirk. In the film, Kirk begins to emerge as the man who'll become a legendary Starfleet captain and barrels into action with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, which includes Spock (Zachary Quinto), Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana).

"...J.J. and every person that was taking over for one of these legendary actors talked about the ways in which we could pay homage to what had been done before, but pay homage while not mimicking. So there was a discussion about how to take the scalpel and which parts to take from the original versions..."

Eric Bana on Star Trek and stardom

The Aussie star of Croatian origin Eric Bana (neé Banadinovich) has become a sex symbol, but before his good looks gathered widespread appeal he began his artistic career as a stand-up comedian. In an exclusive interview with RT, Bana said that “stand-up comedy is a great background for a performer because it teaches you to be brave. It’s a very, very hard job, so there’s very little that makes you feel uncomfortable as an actor because you’ve been through so much of it before. It gives you an ability to look at things differently because you’re constantly writing your own material and are analyzing things. I think it does help your acting. I’ve had a lot of characters that were so intense and serious that I haven’t had much chance to inject humor into them, but Star Trek, I felt, was the one that didn’t take itself so seriously and there was a lot of humor there.”

Director/producer J.J. Abrams, known for his innovative work on such television series as Fringe, Lost and Alias, is bringing these newly re-imagined, original characters to life again on the big screen, in a way that makes them accessible to the most die-hard Trek fans, along with those who may never have seen Trek before.

At the press day for the film, Abrams talked about re-inventing something so beloved, in a way that makes it feel fresh and new for audiences today.

"...Casting the movie was a huge challenge and we were incredibly lucky to find these actors. April Webster and Alyssa Weisberg, who are our casting directors, are terrific. But, I’ve never had to cast something that had something that pre-existed it, where the actors have to take over these iconic roles...."

Star Trek movie has UK premiere

The stars of the new Star Trek movie have gathered in London's West End for the film's British premiere.

Actors from the latest sci-fi outing, including Simon Pegg and Chris Pine - who plays Captain Kirk - were greeted by hundreds of fans.

Other actors including Eric Bana and Heroes' Zachary Quinto - who is Spock - were also in Leicester Square.

The new movie charts the early days of the starship Enterprise, with original Spock Leonard Nimoy in a cameo role.

The film, which had its premiere in Sydney, Australia, is due to be released across the UK on 8 May.

The actors have been jetting around the world on a tour to promote the new movie, stopping off in several countries including Japan, France and New Zealand.

The London event dispensed with the traditional red carpet in favour of a special blue Star Trek one.

Pegg said at the premiere: "For me, tonight is very special. It's the Empire Leicester Square. I saw films here as a child... it's a geek dream come true."

Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on Star Trek

Firstshowing has interviewed screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on their highly anticipated 'Star Trek'. The two talk about how they got into writing, producing and being intricately involved in the filming process. The pair also talk about their dream come true in working on the new Trek flick, writing it in 6 months, and going back to watch the old episodes. They go on to chat about the idea of the film being a prequel, working with director J.J. Abrams and how they think the hardcore fans will react. 'Star Trek' is out in theaters May 8th.

"...it wasn't a dream only because it seemed entirely impossible. I couldn't even imagine that we would ever get an opportunity like that. I always hoped we would make movies but never inherently something that meant so much to us. That's a whole other kind of surreal animal that we never defined..."
