In Monday Recount, ‘The Hangover’ Grabs No. 1 Spot from ‘Up’

Take that, America’s undying spirit of whimsical adventure! Though box office estimates released over the weekend predicted that “Up,” the Disney-Pixar animated feature, would remain at No. 1 for the second week in a row, when ticket sales were recalculated on Monday, the top spot went to the R-rated Warner Brothers comedy “The Hangover.”

In Sunday’s estimates, “Up,” about an old man’s journey via a house held aloft by balloons, was expected to gross about $44.2 million in domestic ticket sales, and “The Hangover,” about three men searching for a fourth pal after a Las Vegas bachelor party gone wrong, was expected to finish second with about $43.3 million.

According to Monday’s update, “The Hangover” grossed about $45 million; it remains the third-highest opening weekend for an R-rated comedy, behind “Sex and the City” and “American Pie 2.”

Hangover' upsets 'Up

Revised Sunday figures favor Warner Bros. film

Thanks to a stronger-than-expected Sunday, Warner Bros.' "The Hangover" laughed its way past Disney-Pixar's "Up" to win the weekend at the domestic box office.

"Hangover," co-produced and co-financed by Legendary Pictures, grossed $45 million from 3,269 theaters.

That doesn't mean "Up" lacked lift. The 3-D toon declined just 35% in its second frame, grossing $44.1 million from 3,818 theaters for a domestic cume of $137.2 million.

Estimates supplied by the studios Sunday showed "Up" winning the weekend by a narrow margin at $44.2 million. Warners reported that "Hangover," directed by Todd Phillips grossed $43.3 million.

Box office upsets like this are rare, since studios are generally aggressive in their Sunday estimates.

"Hangover," however, grossed $1.7 million more than projected, even with the NBA playoffs and MLB baseball games.

Todd Phillips directed the buddy comedy, which stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha as four friends who have an unforgettable trip to Las Vegas.

Early Sunday, Warners estimated "Hangover" would gross $11.9 million for the day; instead, the film grossed $13.6 million. The comedy grossed $16.5 million on Friday and $14.9 million on Saturday.

The size of "Hangover's" opening is one of the biggest surprises of the year.

EXPECTATIONS

What I'd Seen - There have been so many trailers and clips for this one floating around for so long, my main worry going in was that I’d already seen all the funny parts.

What I'd Heard - Buzz started building on this one early. I tried my best to avoid early word as much as possible since I knew this was high on my summer must-see list. Even so, as a big fan of Phillips’ sophomoric masterpiece, Old School, my hopes were high.

What I Wanted - The same high level of rapid-fire comedy Phillips has delivered in the past (we’ll give him a pass on the mediocre Starsky and Hutch).

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On - The Hangover doesn’t wait very long before kicking the comedy into high gear. After an opening scene in which a bloodied Bradley Cooper stands on the desert roadside informing the bride via cell phone that the groom is, in fact, missing, we’re off and running. What follows is a brutally relentless comedy assault with so many laughs that you might need to see it again just to hear the lines you missed when the audience was laughing so loudly.

What Turned Me Off - Hmm, big laughs, tigers, Heather Graham breast-feeding, naked Asian man beating the boys with a tire iron, Mike Tyson singing Phil Collins... I’m trying, but I’m not finding much to dislike here.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - Time will tell where this one falls on the comedy scale, but my initial impression is that this has a chance at classic status. I was pretty tired when I saw it and it still had me laughing throughout. I’m looking forward to a second viewing.

I Left Saying - For all the great bits they gave away in the endless WB marketing campaign leading up to this week’s release, there’s still loads of great material they managed to hide from audiences. See this one before your idiot coworkers ruin it for you at the water cooler.

Expiry Date - Lack of star power is about the only obstacle in The Hangover’s path. If you’re debating between this one and Land of the Lost, stop right now. Even Will Ferrell and dinosaurs can’t compete with this comic mastery. The Hangover should have strong box office and a long shelf-life as a party favorite for years to come.

"...It's like anything - there are ups and downs and I think my friends who have gone through this with me have a real perspective. And so do my parents. But, then again, I'm 34, not 24. When I first started to do this it was awkward, but now it's just great. It's f---ing great. The fact that I'm about to go to the Ritz and do a Q&A is crazy..."

Great stag nights come in two varieties: the ones you’ll never forget and the ones so riotous you can’t remember a thing that happened. The Hangover focuses on the latter type, eliciting a steady stream of laughs from a story about a particularly raucous (and unexpectedly dangerous) Las Vegas stag party that goes wrong in many funny ways. Proudly inappropriate and buoyed by both a clever script and some obvious chemistry between the film’s male leads, director Todd Phillips’ comedy will play like gangbusters with men and may even attract some women who know and love knuckleheads like the ones up on the screen.

The Hangover opens in the US on June 5, the same weekend as another comedic entry, Will Ferrell’s Land Of The Lost. Warner Bros. will look to emphasize Hangover’s R-rating, hoping that audiences of previous adult-themed summer comedies – such as Wedding Crashers, Knocked Up and Superbad – will come flocking. With co-lead Bradley Cooper the most recognizable name among the film’s stars, The Hangover’s other major selling point could end up being director Todd Phillips, who has established a track record with male-centric R-rated comedies like Old School and Road Trip.

Best friends Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) take their pal Doug (Justin Bartha) to Las Vegas for his bachelor party, accompanied by Doug’s weird soon-to-be brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis). But when Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up the next morning in their Vegas hotel room, they can’t remember what they did during the previous evening and, more importantly, what happened to Doug, who has vanished.

Before 'Hangover,' Bradley Cooper gets good buzz

Bradley Cooper has returned to the scene of the crime: Caesars Palace, where the actor, his castmates and the crew of the new big-screen comedy "The Hangover" lived for more than month.

It's here that they portrayed the destruction of a $4,000-a-night hotel suite and, oh yes, the livers of the film's four lead characters.

"...The odd thing is, it's weird that it's not weird," Cooper said Saturday. "In fact, it feels so comfortable being back in Vegas, the slot machines in the airport that used to make me feel awkward and anxiety-stricken, now I feel sort of at home..."

"...The guy I'm playing is Alan and he's a guy who went to raves ten years ago and is probably effected by some of the substances he took at raves. And he's still wearing the same clothes that he wore at raves but he's gained like 25 pounds. That's basically the character. He's really kind of....he's misplaced, which is a good word. He's hanging out with these guys but they don't want him around because he's a weirdo..."
