In Monday Recount, ‘The Hangover’ Grabs No. 1 Spot from ‘Up’

Though box office estimates released over the weekend predicted that “Up,” the Disney-Pixar animated feature, would remain at No. 1 for the second week in a row, when ticket sales were recalculated on Monday, the top spot went to the R-rated Warner Brothers comedy “The Hangover.”
In Sunday’s estimates, “Up,” about an old man’s journey via a house held aloft by balloons, was expected to gross about $44.2 million in domestic ticket sales, and “The Hangover,” about three men searching for a fourth pal after a Las Vegas bachelor party gone wrong, was expected to finish second with about $43.3 million.
According to Monday’s update, “The Hangover” grossed about $45 million; it remains the third-highest opening weekend for an R-rated comedy, behind “Sex and the City” and “American Pie 2.”
