THE HURT LOCKER is an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James (Jeremy Renner), takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge (Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty), by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he’s indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James’ true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever.

Box Office: “Hurt Locker” Huge!

Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” bowed in four theaters this weekend and according to estimates, it took in a huge $144,000 gross. That makes for a $36,000 average for the Summit Entertainment release, topping the opening of recent films like “Whatever Works” and “Away We Go” to become the second biggest limited debut of 2009, behind only “Sunshine Cleaning.” This is particularly impressive considering that, unlike those three examples, “Locker” is not a comedy and does not feature any well-known stars. It’s also set amidst the Iraq war, which has spelt box office death for essentially any other film. But it seems fantastic reviews and a plot that focuses less directly on the political or social themes of the war and more on a deadly game of urban combat, has helped “Locker” kick the losing streak, at least so far.Read the full article here.

'Hurt Locker' pits men against bombs
Published on: June 9, 2009
The great director Alfred Hitchcock used to describe the distinction between surprise and suspense in terms of a bomb placed underneath a table.
If two people sit at the table and the bomb suddenly goes off, Hitchcock explained, that's surprise. But if an audience watches the bomb get placed under the table, and the people at the table have an innocuous conversation, and the bomb is set to go off in a few minutes, and time ticks away while the audience fidgets -- that, said Hitchcock, is suspense.
"The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow had plenty of both to work with.
"The Hurt Locker," which opens in limited release June 26 and wider throughout July, concerns a Baghdad-based American bomb disposal unit in the Iraq war. It's the job of the unit, and particularly Staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner), to find and defuse the bombs set around the city, a constant battle during the film's 2003-04 time frame.
