Bio
Born 1947 in Tilburg, Holland, and graduated at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam 1970, Theo van de Sande has been working as a director of photography since 1972. He has shot numerous feature films and feature length documentaries, shorts, documentaries, TV series and music shows. Among them Meisje met het rode haar, Het (1981), which received the "Dutch Film Critics Award" in 1982, Illusionist, De (1984) which received in 1984 the "Dutch Best Film" and the "Dutch Film Critics Award", Wisselwachter, De (1986), which won the prize for "Best Cinematography" during the Madrid Film Festival. Aanslag, De (1986) received The Academy Award and The Golden Golbe for "Best Foreign Film". In 1982 and 1987 Theo van de Sande received the "Golden for Best Cinematography, the highest award bestowed upon a director of photography in The Netherlands. Van de Sande has been living in Los Angeles since 1987 and has worked with a variety of film directors, among them: Robert Wise, Garry Marshall, Joan Micklin Silver, Lasse Hallström, Penelope Spheeris and 'Mick Jackson'. His critically acclaimed work in the United States include: Crossing Delancey (1988), Miracle Mile (1989), 0102590 and Volcano (1997). Theo van de Sande has also filmed in Belgium, France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait, Gulf States, Surinam, Israel, Lebanon, Cuba and Indonesia. He speaks English, French, German and Dutch fluently.
Director of Photography- Job Description
A cinematographer who is ultimately responsible for the process of recording a scene in the manner desired by the director. The Director of Photography has a number of possible duties: selection of film stock, cameras, and lenses; designing and selecting lighting, directing the gaffer's placement of lighting; shot composition (in consultation with the director); film developing and film printing.
