Venice Film Festival Names Joe Dante’s ‘The Hole’ Best 3-D Film

At this years Venice Film Festival Joe Dante’s The Hole beat out Coraline, and Up in competition for the Festival’s new Persol 3-D award. The Hole, which currently has no U.S. distributor or release date tells the story of a family that moves into a house with a bottomless hole in the basement that unleashes your worst fears, and stars Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Teri Polo and Bruce Dern. The film also beat out Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Experience and My Bloody Valentine, which proves yet again, that a film doesn’t need distributors or celebrities to make it awesome! Hopefully now, with prestige and acclaim attached to The Hole, it won't be long before it snags a distributor and lands in a theater near you!

The Hole - 3D to compete for 3D award at the Venice Film Festival

With the amount of 3D movies being produced continuously expanding, The Venice Film Festival has decided to take 3D pictures seriously, and has announced a new prize for the best 3D movie of the year.
Nine films will be competing for this award. The films include: Journey to the Center of the Earth, Monsters vs. Aliens, My Bloody Valentine, Battle for Terra, Coraline, Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, UP and Joe Dante’s The Hole – 3D.

Buzz begins on Joe Dante's latest, 'The Hole'

Following its trailer screening at the San Diego Comic-Con, Joe Dante's return to "family horror" with The Hole will surely set the movie blogs alight with chatter. And while the movie wraps its post production one of the first writers out of the gate is The Examiner's Jeff Swenson in a speculation piece on what fans can expect from the man who brought us classics like Gremlins, The Howling and Piranha.

Swenson may be speculating a little prematurely, given very little information except for a summary has been released to the public. But if it gets the conversation moving, it's worth a read nonetheless.

Never mind the title is destined to stir a few jokes -- even Joe Dante himself told Movieset.com he hopes the name will change in time for release ("I don't want people calling this Joe Dante's Hole") -- we can't wait for Dante's return to the big screen in 2010.

The Hole is directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) and tells the story of a pair of brothers stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares.

The Camera Technology Behind Joe Dante's THE HOLE 3D

THE HOLE 3D is about a mother who moves to a rural area from the big city with her two boys (18 and 10 years old) for some mysterious reason. The two brothers come across a strange door in their floor with locks on it after they had moved some things around. After managing to get the door open, they uncover a deep, black "hole" that of course they venture into that "leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares".

But you can't successfully depict the darkest corridors of anyone’s fears on film these days without some heavy-duty hardware!

Jim Dorey gives us the skinny on the Camera Technology used to create the effects that are going to shock and amaze you when THE HOLE 3D hits theaters!
