Synopsis

Genre: Drama | History

At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after.

  • Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie discuss 'Valkyrie' and 'The Usual Suspects'

    Published on: February 12, 2009

The Dallas News has caught up with Singer and McQuarrie on their recent collaboration, 'Valkyrie'. Tom Cruise plays would-be Hitler assassin Col. Claus von Stauffenberg in Valkyrie, and, obviously, all plots to kill Hitler failed. McQuarrie, who co-wrote the script with Nathan Alexander, believes the known ending was the "single biggest asset" to Valkyrie because it creates a tragic, foreboding suspense. McQuarrie says only after finishing the film and preparing to do press interviews about it did he and Singer realize they both had completely different conceptions about the plot. "I pulled Bryan aside the night before press began and I said, 'We need to get our stories straight because people are starting to ask what happened and what didn't,' " recalls McQuarrie. "And we got into the biggest argument we've ever had in our lives." 'Valkyrie' is out in theaters now.

"...One of us believed that the story was all lies, peppered with little bits of the truth. And the other one believed it was all true, peppered with tiny, little lies. ... We each thought we were making a movie that was completely different from what the other one thought..."

"...I just love movies, and I hope to be doing this for the rest of my life. But even early on, back when I was working on "Taps" or "Risky Business," I knew it was important to enjoy the moment, because you never know if it might all end right here. As proud as I am of the fact that I’ve always chosen projects that I felt would be challenging, the main thing is I’ve always wanted to entertain..."
