Synopsis
For years, Bliss Cavendar (Academy Award® nominee Ellen Page) has been dreaming of escaping her tiny, truck-stop of a town Bodeen, Texas. Unfortunately her devoted, beauty pageant obsessed mother (Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden) is convinced that Bliss can only succeed in life if she wins the crown at the local Miss Blue Bonnet Pageant, but the awkward outsider knows there’s something bigger and better out there. When Bliss sneaks off to the big city of Austin with her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) she discovers a world unlike anything she could ever imagine: roller derby, with its girl-power-meets-punk-rock spirit and its liberating celebration of wild individuality. - In Theaters October 9th, 2009.

First time director Drew Barrymore took some time out of her busy promotional tour to talk about her upcoming Film Whip It, which hit’s theaters Friday October 2nd, 2009. Whip It is a coming-of-age story about a rebellious Texan youth who ditches the beauty pageant scene to take part in the rough and ragged world of roller derby.
“…It was very challenging shooting a sport that's unorthodox. It's not like, "Here's the hoop, here's the ball, go!" Roller derby rules aren't well-known, and that was an interesting challenge. In promotion of her directorial debut film Whip It, Drew Barrymore will be going on Tour spreading the action and fun of roller derby throughout the states and even in Canada! The film follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), an indie-rock loving misfit who finds a way to deal with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin. Barrymore plans on hitting Farmington Hills, Chicago and Dallas as well as Toronto for the International Film Festival staring on the 13th of September. ‘Whip It’ word premiere at Toronto International Film Festival

The list of galas and special presentations for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival has been released, and boy howdy is it going to be star studded. One film to keep an eye out for is Whip it, the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore that stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small-town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller-derby. Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock) plays Bliss’s disapproving mother, while Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Juliette Lewis (Old School) play roller-derby stars. Whip It also stars Eve, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern, Alia Shawkat, Ari Graynor, Andrew Wilson, Zoe Bell and singer-songwriter Landon Pigg.
